Polling religious groups within the U.S. presents unique methodological challenges. Traditional approaches often require costly screening of the general population to identify individuals belonging to specific religious groups, and questions about religion and religiosity can be sensitive, requiring careful design to ensure accuracy and respondent comfort. This webinar hosted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) explores the full range of solutions for interviewing religious populations—many of them with very low prevalence rates—and particularly how probability panels like AmeriSpeak offer innovative solutions to these challenges. Leveraging extensive profile data, researchers can efficiently identify and recruit members of targeted religious groups for web-based surveys designed under best practices in questionnaire development. The session will highlight methodological considerations such as sampling strategies and efficiency, sensitivity in question wording, and strategies for minimizing bias. Drawing on real-world examples—including recent surveys fielded by AmeriSpeak at NORC at the University of Chicago of Muslim and Jewish populations as well as the Pew Religious Landscape Survey—the webinar will illustrate practical approaches to overcoming common obstacles in polling religious groups. Attendees will gain insights into cost-effective recruitment, ethical considerations, and robust design techniques that enhance data quality and representativeness.
